There's so much crossover but also very distinct differences that speak to the strengths and interests of the individual. Here's the best way to think about it:
Chap Recap: Great if someone is interested in social media content creation, school media, and shorter-form projects. It’s highly collaborative, fast-paced, and gives a lot of experience producing content that’s shareable and immediately impactful.
Film Production: Ideal for someone who wants to dive into cinematic storytelling, long-form projects, and a more traditional filmmaking experience, including scriptwriting, shotlisting, and editing. It’s more structured but gives a deeper understanding of film as an art form.
Overlap: Both courses can be taken all four years of high school, are electives, and allow students to explore creativity and technical skills. They both involve teamwork, planning, and visual storytelling.
Both:
Learn camera, editing, and production skills
Work collaboratively with a crew
Create original video content
Use professional equipment and editing software
Gain real production experience
Can be taken all four years of high school
Are electives and do not count as art credit
Chap Recap Focus: Social media and school media production
Create short-form content for Chap Recap and the school’s Instagram
Produce weekly video announcements with campus leadership
Work in smaller crews with roles such as producer, editor, and camera person
Learn how to make scroll-stopping social media content for audience engagement
Work in a fast-paced production environment with quick turnaround
Great for students who:
Enjoy social media and content creation
Want to be on camera or create personality-driven content
Thrive in social settings and are comfortable out and about in the community
Like short, fast projects
Value practical application of broad production skills
Film Production Focus: Cinematic storytelling and filmmaking
Learn film theory and visual storytelling
Practice scriptwriting, shot listing, and production planning
Work in larger crews with roles such as director, cinematographer, producer, editor, and sound designer
Create short films, trailers, music videos, stop-motion animation, and more!
Develop skills in cinematography, sound mixing, production design, and post-production
Great for students who:
Want to tell stories through film
Are excited to invest time in learning production techniques and advanced applications
Enjoy planning and crafting longer projects
Are interested in directing, cinematography, or screenwriting
The choice really comes down to whether you feel drawn to fast, dynamic media production or longer-form cinematic storytelling. They are both so fun!
